VAWA Petition

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petition provides a pathway to safety and lawful status for individuals who have experienced abuse by a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident spouse, parent, or adult child. MAS Immigrant Justice Center (MASIJC) offers compassionate, confidential, and trauma-informed representation to survivors seeking protection through this process.

Unlike traditional family-based petitions, a VAWA self-petition allows individuals to apply independently without the abuser’s knowledge, consent, or participation. MASIJC works closely with clients to prepare a strong and carefully documented petition, demonstrating the qualifying relationship, good moral character, shared residence, and evidence of abuse, which may include physical, emotional, psychological, or financial harm.

These cases require both legal precision and deep sensitivity. MASIJC ensures that each client’s story is presented with dignity and care, gathering supporting documentation such as personal statements, affidavits, medical or counseling records, police reports when available, and other credible evidence. Our team understands that many survivors may not have traditional forms of proof, and we work to build a compelling case based on the totality of circumstances.

In addition to filing the self-petition, MASIJC assists with related benefits, including work authorization and adjustment of status when eligible, helping survivors move toward independence and long-term stability.

At its core, the VAWA self-petition is about restoring control, safety, and dignity. MASIJC stands with survivors every step of the way, ensuring that the law serves as a pathway to protection, not a barrier to it.
